B-hyve Smart Hose Faucet Timers Onboarding redesign

OVERVIEW

B-hyve mobile app

B-hyve is a smart sprinkler timer app that allows you to control or monitor your sprinklers from anywhere in the world with the convenience of your iOS and android smart device. 

PROBLEM

Home owners didn't know how to put their devices in pairing mode. 

Several users attempted to onboard a Gen 1 Hose Faucet Timer using a Gen 2 Hub.

Orbit B-hyve Gen 1 hose faucet timers are not compatible with Gen 2 hubs, and older Gen 1 hubs do not work with newer Gen 2 timers.

SOLUTION

Educate home owners on how to set their devices on pairing mode in the onboarding process.

Provide hand-holding support in the onboarding process to help home owners identify the compatibility between B-hyve hose faucet timers and B-hyve Wi-Fi hubs.

Allow home owners to create a program in the onboarding process.

GOAL

The Goal

1. Simplify the onboarding process for B-hyve Smart Hose Faucet Timers to ensure a seamless setup for homeowners. 

2. Provide step-by-step guidance during the onboarding flow to reduce user error and frustration. 

3. Manual Program creation, allow homeowners to easily set up a program schedule in the onboarding process.

Animation Design 

While working on this project, I created the following animations to provide step-by-step guidance during the onboarding process. These visual aids were designed to clarify physical hardware interactions, such as triggering pairing mode, and to ensure a smoother setup experience for the user.

Testing Insights

1. Homeowners were able to complete the onboarding process. 

2. Homeowners learned how to put their hose faucet timers into pairing mode through the onboarding flow. However, I noticed that some users attempted to onboard more than one hose faucet timer at the same time.

Results

In October 2024, we launched the new B-hyve Hose Faucet Timer onboarding process, and homeowners have responded positively. Since the launch, the volume of support calls regarding 'onboarding issues' has decreased by 78%. However, connectivity remains a challenge; users often overlook that the B-hyve Wi-Fi Hub has a range of approximately 150 feet, which is further reduced by solid walls. Additionally, some users attempt to onboard or control multiple timers simultaneously—functions that are currently unsupported by the B-hyve app.
